청년기에는 기억이 가장 강렬하고 가장 오래 남기 때문에 기억에 특별세를 부과해야 한다. 그러나 무엇을 기억할 것인가를 선택하는데 있어서는 최고의 주의력과 선견지명이 필요한데, 청년기에 습득한 교훈은 평생 기억되기 때문이다.
The memory should be specially taxed in youth, since it is then that it is strongest and most tenacious. But in choosing the things that should be committed to memory the utmost care and forethought must be exercised; as lessons well learnt in youth are never forgotten.
